House Painter in Wantirna

Preparing your room for painting and decorating

If you are thinking about hiring a Liverpool painter and decorator for your home, you are best to get a professional Liverpool painter and decorator in first as they will get the job done to a very high standard. For smaller jobs it may be possible that you don't need a Liverpool painter and decorator you may find you can do this yourself with a little bit of knowledge and know how you could achieve this.

Preparation of your surfaces before the painter and decorator starts to paint is most important to getting a high quality finish. Starting from the top of the room (ceilings) and working down (skirting boards).

How to prepare the ceilings for the painter and decorator:

If your ceiling is freshly plastered not much preparation is needed for the painter and decorator just a slight rub down with a suitable sand paper or scrape of any bits of plaster that may be there. For ceilings that have been painted before scrape any loose flakes of paint or other foreign bodies with a suitable scraper. Give them a good rub down with suitable sand paper to get a smooth surface for painting. Once this is done to your satisfaction you as the painter are ready to paint the ceiling with your chosen colour, usually two coats of paint should suffice. If after you have given your ceiling its first coat of paint, you may find holes or cracks that will need to be filled before you put your second coat of paint on. This should be done with suitable poly filler. Once filled leave to dry then rub down and touch this up with your paint using a brush or roller, before giving the whole ceiling its second coat of paint.

How to prepare the walls for the painter and decorator:

Preparation to your walls is much the same as what you have done to your ceiling as in giving them a good rub down and scrape off any loose particles on your walls. As with your ceilings 2 coats of paint should suffice, however if the paint that was originally on your wall was very dark a further coat of paint may be needed from the painter. As with the ceiling your walls may need to be filled from holes and cracks follow the same steps as in preparing your ceiling.

How to prepare your woodwork for the painter and decorator:

If your woodwork is new and never been painted before, then the painter and decorator should use a water based primer to seal the new wood first. There is no need to rub your new woodwork down before you paint with the water based primer just scrape any loose particles off. Once you have painted with the primer then you should fill all holes if any with suitable poly filler, once this has dried you may rub all the woodwork down with your sand paper getting a smooth finish. Then dust off with a decorator dust brush. Your next step will be to paint the woodwork with a suitable undercoat this can be water based or oil based paint depending on the decorator needs. This should be then left to dry, once dry you are ready to give your woodwork a final rub down using your sand paper, rub to get a smooth surface for painting, then give a final dust off ready for your final coat of paint, again using either your water based or oil based paint.
